Pacific DataStream Beta website is now live!
August 25, 2022
We’re thrilled to be bringing DataStream to the pacific region. While work is still underway to fully develop Pacific DataStream, we now have a space to welcome monitoring groups and share information on DataStream’s newest regional hub!
What is DataStream?
DataStream is an open data platform for accessing, visualizing and sharing Western scientific water and sediment quality data. And it’s free and open for anyone to use.
Digitally secure and scientifically robust, DataStream ensures that water datasets are findable, accessible, interoperable and (re)usable, now and into the future.
You can learn more about the core principles guiding the development of DataStream’s open data platform in our Data Governance Policy.
Publishing data on DataStream
We work with water monitoring initiatives and organizations of all kinds that want to share their data openly, including:
- Community-based monitoring groups
- Watershed associations
- Indigenous organizations and governments
- Municipal, Provincial/Territorial and Federal governments
- Academic researchers and consultants
Data contributors maintain ownership of their data and control over what data they choose to publish on the system.
Read this post to learn more about using Pacific DataStream to publish your data.
Connecting with other data systems
We know that British Columbia and Yukon are active regions in terms of water monitoring and the systems used to manage, share and analyze data.
As in other regions where we work, building connections across data systems is essential to our collective success in building a robust data sharing ecosystem.
Some examples of the connections between DataStream and other systems include:
Data import:
- Water Rangers data platform
- Province of British Columbia Environmental Monitoring System
Data discovery:
- Google dataset search
- Federated Research Data Repository
- DataCite
In addition, DataStream’s API allows other tools to pull data from DataStream for analysis and reporting.
Please contact us with any inquiries about connecting with other data systems.
Collaboration in action
DataStream’s mission is to promote knowledge sharing and advance collaborative water stewardship so our waters remain healthy for generations to come.
We are so excited to now be working in the Pacific region and are here to answer any questions as we get things rolling.
Throughout 2022, we’ll be actively working with water monitoring organizations to upload data to Pacific DataStream in advance of its official launch next year.
Stay tuned for more details!

Pacific DataStream launches
Pacific DataStream is live! Launching at the Environmental Flows Conference in Kelowna, our latest regional hub already holds millions of water quality data points from across British Columbia and the Yukon, all open and available for anyone to explore and download. Explore monitoring results from rivers, lakes, and streams, covering a range of parameters, from temperature and dissolved oxygen to lab-analyzed data like nutrients and metals.
Supporting standardized community-based water quality monitoring in the Greater Vancouver region
Nikki Kroetsch is a big believer in the power of community-based creek monitoring. Governments don’t have the capacity to monitor every little waterway, she says, which has led to many stewardship groups doing the work.
